{Quest Details} Quest Name: Palace of Black Ice Participants: Laoren, Mia Details: Laoren has requested Mia's help to investigate a growth containing malicious energy along a branch near Tescaula. The two will fight through a dungeon to eventually destroy the heart of the growth. Or, at least, that's what Laoren had planned. Word Count: 1700 Modding: N/A I think Reward: 50 Florence per participant Shareable?: No The trip out of Glaciara was a calm sort of trip in the morning. At least at this time of year, it seemed like most people were heading into the city at that time of day, whether for tourism, a social gathering, or for work. Among those heading out, Laoren could spot at least one individual hung over from a prior night's goings-on and another that seemed to be taking the train for a while, if his armament of puzzle books were any indicator.
As for Laoren herself, she was currently staring out the window for her 'stop' to arrive. Further away from the flowers, the branches began to look indistinguishable, and so her brow was contorted in concentration as she struggled to remember exactly where their destination was.
Quite suddenly, her eyes widened and she turned to the pugilist nearby, Laoren's new acquaintance Mia. "Our transfer's here." Without warning, she opened the window next to her seat fully, letting in the wind. After feeling the gust in her face for a moment, she turned back again and asked, "By the way, could you possibly carry me as we jump out dramatically? Just to make sure we don't get separated and all."

Mia had been standing for a while now, since, by the look on her temporary partner's face, they must have been coming close to their 'stop' if she was paying such attention to the branches around them. As far as she could tell they were nowhere near the next flower, but if they were lucky they could potentially catch the attention of another train to find their way home. She'd tell herself that at least, not wanting to walk for hours on end once this was all done just to reach civilization again. Rolling her shoulders back as she clung to one of the support ropes hanging from the train's ceiling, careful not to fall over whenever the train got a bit rocky, she watched the one wing angel open up a window and moved to follow. She was already thinking about how to tuck and roll into the snow that was thankfully hitting the branch this far away from the flower, but then Laoren threw her a catch.
"Oh...yeah. Cause this jump wasn't dangerous enough when I was just looking out for herself." Rolling her eyes she hooked an arm around the girl's waste regardless, ignoring the annoyed stares of other passangers from the sudden biting chill their open window created, she took a few steps back and stated. "You'll wanna tuck in your wing." Before charging at the open window, leaping up and tucking in her legs, she wouldn't get too far out of the train before her back hit the snow, crashing against it and skimming across the white surface a good 3 times before skidding to a halt, hissing at the chilly bite of the powdered ice clinging to her skin, having let go of Laoren after the second skim and looking for where they'd ended up landing as she pushed to her own feet.

Having been prepared for disappointment, Laoren was a little surprised as Mia prepared to grab her. Maybe not as surprised as she might normally have been since this one had definitely proven herself to be the type to go along with things, but it was still something she would get to cross off her rather long bucket list.
The self-proclaimed human obediently folded up her single wing and balled herself up a bit as Mia grabbed her. Fortunately, her hired adventurer's strong build covered her from quite a bit of the wind chill, at least at first. After they bounced the first time, Laoren went rolling at a slight angle, but she was able to use the air resistance from her one wing to slow herself down very slightly so she didn't move too far.
By the time Laoren managed to orient herself and stand up straight, Mia had already found her. She smiled broadly even through the chilling cold as she patted the snow off of her jacket and wing, feathers fluttering as she tried to shake herself free of icy debris. "I haven't done a train jump before, but the last time I fell from any great height, my wing unfurled and a gust of wind sent me spinning who-knows-where," she finally explained. "This was much better in comparison."
Looking around, Laoren's eyes caught on to a 'twig' of sorts in the distance, a branching road in the tree. "That-a-way's where we need to be," she said with a very slight chatter of her teeth. "I should have asked earlier, but are you better or worse in the cold because you've got flames and such?"

Mia helped the one winged angel up to their feet, having gotten no indication of their race personally that was just how they'd be mentally referring to them for now beyond using her name. With a firm grasp around her inner wrist, Mia tugged them to their feet nice and sharp and helped them get their balance, dusting off the snow from her own coat and cracking her neck to either side as she relaxed a little with the sense that their journey was at least close to completion. Sure there were still monsters on the menue apparently, but Mia was looking forward to that part if anything.
"Well glad to hear I made it at least a relatively soft landing for you." She smirked and shrugged before gesturing for the woman to follow as she pointed out the way, Mia feeling the chill already seeping through her coat. So far from a flower, they had no extra heat sources to rely on leaving Mia to face the biting chill at full force. With the question of how her flames handled the cold, Mia flicked out her arm, her forearm coated in flames acting as a torch and heatsource between them as she continued walking.
"Well my magic typically is a bit killer here. Things exist here to defend against the cold, so introduce heat and they run. On the flip side it's harder to actually burn anything, and beyond that, me as a fire dragon-kin, I don't handle the cold well. Heck, I wouldn't handle it well just for being Arduran, but we stay out here too long and I'm gonna start getting sluggish."
With their trek moving, she glanced to her companion and asked. "How about you? You were never too clear on what your magic can do for me?"

It seemed like the cold was a double-edged sword here. Still, Laoren considered it a stroke of luck that she'd managed to snag someone with fire-based abilities right off the bat. "Once we're finished, I can guide us to a camp a little bit past our destination so we can warm up before hitching a ride back. I set it up on my way here," she reassured the fire-wielder. Certainly it would be no substitute for a cozy room in the city, but at least she had the foresight to tuck away a few ways to defrost.
"Oh, and my magic is mostly an offensive aid," she explained as they walked. "It's effective against certain types of monsters, like what we hope to encounter today." After saying this, she rummaged through her pockets, eventually fishing out a small rubber gavel. It appeared to be a novelty toy of some sort, giving off a squeak and a small glow when she smacked it against her palm. "Well, this will do."
Holding the gavel in her hand, Laoren slowed her pace as she concentrated on it. A black haze began to creep from her wrist and towards the toy, surrounding it in smoky energy. "Nothing too fancy. Just a straightforward 'hurt-em-more' type of magic, you know? Wears off after a few minutes." She offered up the empowered toy to Mia for examination.
As they talked, what seemed to be a large, conical structure came into view further down the path. From this distance, it seemed to be frozen over and snow-covered.

Whatever the weather Mia wasn’t all that worried. She was the blonde dragon afterall and she was pretty sure she could handle anything that came there way. A bit of overconfidence perhaps but Mia felt secure in her odds here and was more than ready for any abominable beasties that might be coming their way. At the news there was a campsite waiting for them after the job, Mia let out a clearly relieved sigh. “Aaah. That definitely takes a weight off o’ my shoulders there. Was thinking we’d have to trek right to the nearest flower…you hitched many rides before?”
Hearing that her ‘buffing’ magic was an offensive aid Mia smirked. She always liked to feel a little stronger so that was something to look forward to, even if the girl wasn’t too clear what exactly it was they’d be facing, or what her magic actually did. “Anyone every tell you you can be super vague?” She smirked of course, trying to get across she was just being playful, though she was immediately curious as the toy came out.
Oh so she was getting a demonstration? That put her mind at ease. The black haze did create an air of caution, hoping she wasn’t suddenly working with someone malicious, but hey in this world the types of magic were never clear cut. Her brother tried dark magics once and he was just a dork who wanted to have some skill to him. Sadly he failed at even that, but it showed anyone could get into it regardless of intent.
“Well so long as it don’t mess too much with my glorious flames I’m all for it. You need to apply this to a weapon or can it go directly to my arms?” She took the toy, looking over it for a moment, waving her hand through the dark haze before handing it back.
Looking ahead, as it was clear they were coming up on what appeared to be their destination, Mia decided to make this journey a little easier on the two of them. Rearing her head back, red scales spread out from about Mia’s eyes and a red magical circle appeared infront of her face. Rearing forward again, a long, narrow stream of flame pushed from infront of her face and cut a dead line through the snow, melting it along the branch and making it safe for the blonde to start into a light jog. “Come on then! Lets find this mystical weapon you were going on about!”

"I never take the trains at all," Laoren responded firmly. "But I figure we should complete the train theatrics experience, since we did the jumping off part and whatnot." It was evidently in her nature to play at dramatics, and it was slowly becoming clearer that the novella-reading, reckless sort of Outsiders she had interacted with in the past were likely a conscious choice on her part.
After Mia took the hammer in hand, Laoren made a pushing motion with her thumb, miming an injection. "My power can indeed work directly, although oddly not on myself." She had tried a few times in the past to imbue herself with her power, but it seemed she resisted the effects of her own magic. Unfortunately, there remained no one who could help her out on that front, and combined with her own apparent inadequacy with weaponry, it was easy to see why the branch-walker went into society to ask for help most of the time.
Mia's flames snapped Laoren out of her thoughts as a trail of fire and steam suddenly appeared before them. She whistled a little as she picked up the pace to follow along. "I'll have to remember not to slip on the ice here if I come back alone later..." The mention of the weapon caused a lopsided grin to appear momentarily on Laoren's face, but she didn't say anything.
The cleared path allowed the two to reach their destination quickly and without much issue. As they drew close, the details of the structure became clearer: a tall construct, rivaling a five-story building, shaped like a bamboo shoot. It appeared to be made entirely out of ice underneath the layer of snow which covered it. Its most noticeable attribute, however, was a strong aura of unease which it projected. Just looking at the object was an unsettling ordeal, though nothing about it seemed obviously eldritch.
"Yeah, this is it. Once we destroy this, quest complete." There did not seem to be any monsters around, nor any tracks made by monsters, though the snow could easily have covered those. Laoren herself did not seem particularly wary of that, her frowning face focused on the icy cone.

How did she never take the trains at all, Mia was just...perplexed. Each of the flowers were huge places, to the point you probably couldn't scour an entire flower all that easily, and the branches between them? Jesus those went on so endlessly that you could barely even see other flowers in the distance despite how huge they were. "How long are your trecks girl you must be out on the branches for months."
Whatever though, she had her own adventurer lifestyle and Mia had hers, she wouldn't judge she was just surprised and perplexed by it all. As the two of them moved up towards the tower, the blonde dragon let her eyes trail up the icy structure, but stopped when she realized what exactly they were here for.
"Woah wait, is this not some dungeon type thing? How exactly do you expect us to destroy this? My fire's strong but I can't melt a whole damn tower that'll take me like, a solid day just to melt it enough to topple over, and that's assuming it's not magically non-melting or something."

Months was a bit of an understatement at times, and the thought brought Laoren's customary thin grin to her face as it passed her mind. "I spend most of my time out on the branches, actually. Before going in to Tescaula, I was briefly in Caeluma, but before that...I might've not been back for around half a year or so?" The bird was certainly quite the spectacle, but not anywhere that a person like Laoren could stay comfortably for a long amount of time.
She was aware enough, however, that such a lifestyle was unusual by most standards, and so turned to the matter at hand. There had been, of course, the faintest of hopes that Mia's fires could somehow just blast down the entire thing, but that would've been unfair as an expectation anyway.
"It was supposed to be a dungeon-type thing, if only my magic was up to snuff. That's why I put the legendary staff on the shopping list. Although..." Mulling over their day's shopping, Laoren rummaged through the trip supplies and pulled out the fluffball's special warmth tonic. "I have heard tell that some people draw out the full extent of their powers when their bodies sense extreme danger."
She uncorked the bottle with a nervous expression. "I don't know if I can do this after what you told me. Pour it down my throat for me?" Another unreasonable demand, but Laoren figured Mia would go for it since she'd already agreed to the dramatic action-scene train dismount.

Mia couldn’t even begin to imagine what it was like to be out on the branches. You could watch a squirrel climb a tree in seconds and this wasn’t even comparable. Compared to the world tree, they weren’t even ants. Ants were fast and still visible. They weren’t quite germs, but they were specs on this thing’s branches to say the least. To be stuck out here for more than a year…yeesh, Mia couldn’t even picture it. She’d probably die just from the sheer boredom.
Back to the question at hand with the tower of ice, Mia briefly thought she might be able to handle it if she was given enough time. Melt one side enough and the whole thing might just tip, but if it was a dungeon, odds are the ice was magically re-inforced…at the idea from Laoren, Mia scoffed. Right. Okay. Burn your throat for better magic. There was an idea.
“Ya know usually people…use dungeons? Go in them, fight monsters, get something out of it but…hey. Whatever. I’m sure you know what you’re doing branch walker.”
Taking the bottle, Mia paused, and pulled around her bag, taking out an empty cup she usually filled with warm coffee from her thermos and pouring some into that. “Tell ya what, we’ll share the agony eh? Cartoons say this should give me better fire breath anyway.” Pouring out her own cup, she stepped up to Laoren and tipped their head back, pouring it into their mouth and then pushing their chin up to keep their jaw shut tight, Mia taking her own swig…it would take a few seconds before the combination of mint and spice really hit with how terrible it was.

Laoren was a bit surprised when Mia pushed up on her jaw, but swallowed hastily anyway.
The different flowers had developed many forms of spices over time. Laoren was no culinary expert, but over the years, she had sampled many different dialects of cuisine. Some forms of spiciness felt as though they remained on the tongue. Others burned the back of her throat. The most insidious of all, however, flared straight up through her nasal passages. She'd often thought that, while she could get used to the tongue and perhaps throat burning given enough time, she would never really come to enjoy the sort of spiciness that went up one's nose.
This concoction was all three and more. The unfortunate victim, not having experienced it before, could not even put together a coherent thought as to the degree and nature of the burn. It was as if she had ingested an eldritch being while snorting a line of a different eldritch being, such was the unknowable nature of the pain to her shocked brain. Her tear ducts immediately kicked into overdrive, and she let out a sound not unlike a wild beast being shot in the flank by an arrow.
After what seemed an eternity, but was actually only a fraction of a minute, Laoren bent her mind to the task at hand. Spicy suffering had dimmed her mind to all but the task at hand. She reached a hand forward to touch the icy cone. Immediately, its ominous nature became manifest as a visible, dark aura surrounding it. Slowly, the darkness began to coalesce in a tall, rectangular shape in front of Laoren.
With a booming, low tone, it suddenly resolved into the shape of a door, black and imposing. At seeing this, Laoren collapsed, not because of magical exhaustion, but because she was now violently shoveling snow into her mouth in a futile attempt to stem the pain in her mouth.

Mia didn't handle it much better. While her dragon tongue gave her a little more resistance, it was less the spice that got to her so much as the nauseatic combination of mint with the heated flavours. Before she could even get it fully past her tongue the blonde had keeled over, swallowing on reflex and hating herself for it as she grasped her knees and tried to spit out the concoction, hating her sense of solidarity and comradery in this moment for trying to suffer through this with Laoren. She couldn't even try her fire breath magic because she was so busy gagging.
With her eyes watering and the blonde using the rough fabric of her glove's palm to try and wipe her tongue clean, she finally noticed the door forming ifnront of her, very clearly confused by what exactly was going on here, making a final gagging sound before she could speak clearly again, trying to clear her throat without pushing any of that shit back onto her tongue from the back.
"W-what exactly is this...?"

Laoren did not, or perhaps was unable to, respond until her mouth had been sufficiently numbed to the point where frostbite had become a potential concern. Lacking a convenient handkerchief, she resorted to grossly wiping her accumulated tears and snot from the pain onto the shopping list from earlier before crumpling it and putting it away into one of her pockets.
"We', 'ou shee..." This initial attempt at speech was followed by a few more seconds of rubbing her tongue with the warm parts of her hands and wrists to try and get some feeling back. "Well, you see. My non-combat magic allows me to pull forth, um. It's kind of hard to explain, but I basically take something not physical and then physical-ify it. In this case, I've taken the accursed power surrounding this bulb and, well..."
Laoren stepped forward and pushed the black gates in. Inside was a space larger than the structure behind the gates encompassed, as if the gates were actually a portal to somewhere else. The two could see a grand foyer, with a staircase in the rear, floor and furniture all shimmering ice. Although they couldn't see the sides well without stepping in, the staircase in the rear had two shadowy wolves standing in wait, with jagged ice protruding from their hide. These did not seem to take heed of the two adventurers yet.
"I made it into a dungeon. Should be a bit more up your alley now, right?" Laoren suggested with a slight tilt of her head.

Briefly dipping down to grasp a handful of snow and rest it on her tongue, her mouth open with her hand clasped over it holding the snow, she watched Laoren explain what was going on, quirking her eyebrow as she looked inside the gates, looking at what seemed more like a mansion than some plain old dungeon. She didn't quite grasp the idea behind the magic but as far as she could tell the girl turned some dark aura and stuff into something Mia could actually smash. Well. Okay then. This was more her language. Flicking the snow off her hand and swallowing what had melted against her tongue, she had a wide grin, stepping inside and watching the wolves suddenly get ready to pounce as Mia entered their 'sphere of aggression' as it where.
"Just so I'm clear, this is basically just...If I smash the shit in here, I smash the whole thing...right?"

"Well, pretty much." Laoren gave her a thumbs-up. "Don't worry about us getting stuck inside, either. Once everything's done, the worst that happens if there's no exit is that we just pop back out near where we were. Usually, anyway." Seeing that Mia had stepped in, Laoren followed just behind. It seemed as though the wolves remained focused on the first entrant, at least for now. Perhaps it was plainly evident who the bigger threat was.
As she entered, Laoren immediately began to look around, appearing as though she would just leave the wolves entirely to Mia. She scanned over some doors on the first floor to the side, but they seemed fairly unimportant looking, probably. Just above the staircase behind the wolves, there was a larger looking door which she gave a smile at. "Well, enjoy your smashing. I'll try not to get in the way too much." Laoren's wing unfolded slightly, but it still didn't appear like she had a weapon or martial artistry to call upon.
