Mia may not have been much of a fan of being in the water, but that didnât mean she didnât like water based activities. Sure a boat made her nervous but keep her feet on dry land and she was more than happy to join in with whatever was going on down by the waterâs edge. As such, during a family trip to the Marcuria beach, her family where still somewhat surprised when the blonde dragon seemed eager to see what was going on by one of the pears of the beach village. She headed on down the the village that seemed to be built on wooden platforms supporting it over the sand, while also preparing it for when the tide came in or there was a particularly rough set of waves coming in. A bunch of men, and even a few women of various races had gathered around the piers edge and engaged in a bit of friendly competition it seemed.
Well, it seemed, but as Mia soon noticed one of the posters laying about, this was something far more official. A fishing tournament huh? Now Mia was no fisher, you didnât really get many sources of water out in Ardura. There was also no real regulations behind it apparently. If you wanted an aid to help you hook up the line or the like you could do that, so, knowing one of her paâs more relaxing hobbies was to actually come out to a more watery flower and go out fishing, she took down one of the posters and set about convincing him itâd be a good time.
âAh come on. Whats the worst that could come of it eh? We have a bit of fun with you teaching me how to fish properly. Push comes to shove we might actually place and win something.â She had a hopeful smile on her lips, as her pitch was pretty true. Worst case was they literally just had a good time. Other worst case Mia got super competitive but still managed to have a god laugh about it in the end as she always did. What harm could really come of all that eh?
Her dad seemed both convinced and not convinced at all, knowing his daughter well enough to see right through her and able to tell she was going to get competitive with this right from the get goâŠbuuut at the same time, he supposed he hadnât been fishing in a while, and Mia had to get her competitive nature from somewhere. Admittadly Miaâs own competitive nature was exasperbated by her dragon blood raging like a fire inside herâŠleast thatâs what the kearneyâs told themselves, and so he supposed it wouldnât hurt to have a bit of good natured competition on their day trip. âAâight aâight lass. No need to go convincinâ me. Just let me get your mother an ice cream and Iâll be right over to meetâcha.â The burly looking man leaned over to give his dainty looking wife a kiss before moving up and off the beach towels theyâd all set up, Mia throwing a jacket over her Bikini, but both of them clearly not in the expected attire for a fishing match all the same.
With her mother set up with some ice cream, Mia had gotten the two of t hem a nice spot. You could rent equipment for the game, something theyâd set up for people who were just curious to participate, and for a pretty good price too. Sure it wasnât the best equipment, some of the other more seasoned fisherman using clearly shinier and more modern gear, but Mia was plenty happy with their set up just for a bit of Father Daughter time between the two of them.
Mark had briefly thought to ruin that by asking to join, but one sharp glare put him down. She still wasnât happy with him after the incident with that weird ass slime thing, and while he was definitely still her brother, sheâd be bitter about that for a fair while to say the least.
âAlright, you remember how to get the tackle and bait?â
âYeah yeah, Iâm not a complete noob here.â She smirked at her dad, letting him make sure the rod was in order as she tied a knot in the line around the tackle and made sure the bait was punctured in just the right spot by the fishing hook. As cruel as it was ya had to make sure the bait was still wriggling. With that they both stood, and Mia watched her dad showing her the proper technique for casting out the line. Rather than focus on fishing, the two of them focused on practicing their swings a few times before they settled on one of Miaâs. Unlike the more professional fishermen who were standing with their lines and keeping an eye on them with dedication, Mia and her Pa just laid back in their chairs, having some idle chit chat with a cautious glance whenever the rod shifted, waiting for something to take the bait and for it to show in the bending of the lesser quality rod theyâd propped up against one of the posts on the pier.
âSo, apparently, thereâs another me in one of the realms those outsiders I was helping out came from.â
âAaaah. So thatâs why yer helpinâ âem out.â
âMaybe a little.â She idly commented with a smirk as she leaned back in her chair.
âHeard anything about me? You ainât got some pompous twat for a dad in that world have ya?~â
Mia burst out giggling, shaking her head. âNah nah. Apparently weâre super similar. You still work in mines, but the whole city is underground, you have your usual bushy beard, the same burly frame with a bit of a gut on ya. Same old same old.~â
Smirking a little and chuckling back himself, the elder Kearneyâs chuckle was only stopped by the creaking sound of the rod. By now theyâd caught a few small fish with ease, but the rod had never come close to bending this badly. Before the rod was whipped from itâs spot entirely, both Kearneyâs dove for it and grasped it in their hands, starting to tug back with some damn effort as they whipped the rod back behind the pair of them as best they could, her dad focusing on reeling as she focused on keeping the damn rod from snapping.
âITâS A BIG ONE OF ITS GIVING EVEN ME A FIGHT!â Mia winced a little, firmly grasping the rod around where it was bending most to make sure it didnât just snap and lose them the catch. Her dad was struggling to real it in, but soon itâd seem they didnât need to, as something looking like a huge, dead eyed anglerfish, big enough to probably eat some of the water dwelling races down beneath the surface. Miaâs eyes went wide as it leaped out, but quickly remembered. NO RULES.
âKeep it hooked dad I got this!â
Her dad was clearly perplexed, but as Mia let go he firmly planted down his feet, using some strength boosting magic he used in the mines to keep himself stable as Mia leapt up towards the jumping beast of a fish. Some of the lesser action prone fisherman backed off immediately as the thing rose leaving a lot of commotion behind the blonde, but as scales coated her right fist and flames beyond that, she powered herself up with her impact magic, letting out a powerful roar as she slammed her hardened fist down into the eye of the monster fish, Grinning wide as, despite the squishy sensation, she felt the punch land hard and right in the eye of the beast, a flubbering wail of pain leaving it before it dropped back into the water, Mia rebounding off the force of her punch to tuck and roll back onto the pier, watching her dad starting to real the beast in with much more ease.
Mia gazed down at the other fisherman, grinning with pride at her and her dadâs teamwork. âI think this makes us the winners donât you?~â
